Forres Academy developed a S2 topic in which the concept of sustainability was explored as broadly as possible. Having studied the importance of biodiversity, recycling and energy effeicient buildings, comparison was made of the environmental impact of the use of plastic and paper, fossil fuels and biofuels.
Level 3 outcomes:
SCN303C I have carried out experiments to develop my knowledge of the gases of the air. I can give simple explanations of some of the chemical processes which contribute to climate change and can discuss the consequences of atmospheric change.
SCN309F I can use my knowledge of the different ways in which energy is transferred between hot and cold objects to design an energy-efficient building.
SCN310G I have participated in constructing a model to harness a renewable energy source or energy and can investigate how to optimise the output. By drawing conclusions from my data and evaluating my design I can consider the commercial potential of this source.
SCN311G Through research and from experimental evidence on combustion, I can summarise arguments and express an informed opinion on the use of renewable and non-renewable energy resources.
The topic also included significant aspects of learning from levels 2 and 4. The topic was organised into three sections:

Photosynthesis SCN302B Having investigated the process of phtotsynthesis I can contribute to a presentation on why plants are vital to sustaining life on Earth, and can evaluate other presentations.
Milne’s High School adapted an existing unit to introduce more open-ended investigation, to build on the success of use of the pondweed Cabomba and to put the classwork into context by getting pupils to researdch the broader importance of photosynthesis.

Space SCN 307E I can use my knowledge of the basic needs of humans, and the bodies of our solar system, to put together a reasoned report on whether we can colonise space.
Peterhead Academy collaborated with the English department staff from each department visiting classes in the other. Research was guided by the Science department. The report writing was guided by the English department. This is a small sample of the resources used.

Milne’s High School handed the outcomes related to space over to the pupils to see how they would interpret them. A selction of resources used are pesented here to provide an insight to what was done.

Senses SCN 321S Using my knowledge and understanding of the senses, I can show how modern technology can be used to replace or enhance the senses and so improve the quality of life for individuals.
Banff Academy included a project on Senses into a Light and Sound topic. They included role play – one pupil being blind, another deaf, to explore problems experienced and then researched into possible causes and treatments for deafness and blindness. Presentation style was restricted to a talk, interview or advert to avoid ‘death by powerpoint’. Pupils enjoyed the roleplay, the talks and were motivated by the experience. Teachers were concerned about prior knowledge, level of interpretation, the quality of the science learned by groups, access to appropriate resources and their own knowledge.

Chemical and Physical change SCN 328Z Through a range of experiments I can identify the clues that indicate a chemical reaction has occurred. I can apply my knowledge of chemical and physical changes to analyse everyday examples of change.
Fraserburgh Academy used an enterprise and collaborative working challenge based on the separation of salt from rock salt to exploree SCN 328Z.

Forensic science SCN 330AA I have demonstrated critical tinking when solving problems using evidence arising from forensic science investigations.
Milne’s High School created a crime scene within the school to challenge pupils and develop skills.
